It has been my honor to know Jim Wherry since my daughter married Hannah's grandson, Matt. He was pretty quiet in all the family gatherings (well who could be heard over the Stambaugh crowd!) One night I brought my own dad?s WWII combat diary for everyone to see, and afterward Jim, very quietly told me he had flown in B29s over Japan in WWII and had been on Tinian the day Enola Gay took off loaded with her secret weapon. I have never been so astonished in my life as to meet a Veteran from Tinian Island. I have not shut up about knowing him since. His story, which he only reluctantly and gradually divulged over the next few years, is one of true heroism and American history. ----- Beyond his military service his whole life has been lived with honor and dignity. I will miss him. To his children and family, and to Hannah Stambaugh and the Stambaugh family, my sincere condolences.
