Obituary of Lawrence Johnson

Mr. Lawrence 'Lee' Johnson, age 87, a resident of Lake Alfred, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Winter Haven Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born December 18, 1927, in Winter Haven, Florida, to Amadee Lawrence and Ula Allegra (Helms) Johnson. He was a lifetime Polk County resident, graduated from Winter Haven High School, Class of 1945. He also graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science Degree (he received the Outstanding Student Award in the Fighting Gator Band at UF) and then went on to the Louisiana State University School of Banking. He was a retired Banking President and member of the First United Methodist Church in Lake Alfred. Lee was a United States Navy veteran, serving during WWII (he retired after 25 years as a Lieutenant Commander). Lee was very active in church as the sound system advisor, member at large, board of trustees and many other committees. He was a Lake Alfred Commissioner, past Lake Alfred Mayor, past Lake Alfred Chamber of Commerce president, member of the Lake Alfred Lions Club (where he had 29 years of perfect attendance), member of the Red Cross and was a H20 safety instructor. Lee was also involved with area development projects and committees for Lake Alfred, Auburndale and Winter Haven. He was a member of the Winter Haven Masonic Lodge 186 where he was a past District Deputy, past Grand Master, a Shriner and in 1943, was awarded The Eagle Scout Award. Here are a few more special causes he was involved in: American Cancer Society, Auburndale High School football patrons, treasurer, Lake Alfred parks and recreation and the 'Lee Johnson Baseball Field.' He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Martha Dee Johnson. Lee is survived by his loving family: son: Larry (Sally) Johnson of Rome, GA, 2 daughters: Sandra (Kenneth) Harrison of Auburndale, Patti Coe of Auburndale, 7 grandchildren: Abby, Luke, Christopher, Jessica, Michael, Ryan & Erin, 12 great grandchildren: Reid, Hayden, Landon, Zacary, Brayden, Alexa, Kayl, Mackenzi, Dru, Logan, Ally & Maddie.
