Obituary of Nancy Poole

AUBURNDALE - Mrs. Nancy Katherine Bryan Poole, age 93 a lifetime Polk County resident passed away Friday, August 26, 2011 at Spring Haven. Mrs. Poole was born September 5, 1917 in Nichols, Florida to Roderick Newton Bryan, Sr. and Florence May (Richards) Bryan. Her parents moved to Mulberry when Nancy was in the 1st grade. She graduated from Mulberry High School in 1934 and graduated in 1938 from Florida State College for Women (now FSU) with a degree in business. She is Phi Mu Sorority sister. She moved to Auburndale in 1938 to teach at Auburndale High School. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority. Nancy was the 1st PE teacher at Auburndale High School. During this time she coached girl's basketball and sponsored the cheerleaders. Nancy was introduced to Benjamin Wooten Poole by his sister (Mrs. Guy A. Elizabeth Corley) who was a history teacher at the high school and one of Nancy's dear friends. Nancy & Bennie married in 1944. Mrs. Guy A. Elizabeth "Libba" Corley became her sister-in-law but, Nancy always considered her a sister. She was a member of the Sorosis Club in Auburndale and joined the First United Methodist Church in Auburndale along with Bennie. She and Bennie attended the Homebuilders Sunday School Class. Nancy was on the finance committee for the church, volunteered for several other positions, delivered sermon tapes to the elderly and participated in the Polk County Senior Games for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents - Judge Roderick & May Richards Bryant, Sr.; husband - Benjamin "Bennie" W. Poole; granddaughter - Mary Elizabeth "Libby"; sister-in-law - Mrs. Guy A. Elizabeth "Libba" Corley and brother Roderick Newtown Bryan, Jr. Mrs. Poole is survived by her son, Ben W. (Terri) Poole, III of Mayfield Village, OH; daughter Nancy P. "Nan" Langston of Auburndale, FL.; brother, Dr. Donald McIver (Dr. Laurette) Bryan of Rockledge, FL.; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Bryan of Lakeland, FL.; and great granddaughter, Bryanna Elizabeth "Bree" Kirkland of Winter Haven, FL. In lieu of flowers the family request's donation's in Mrs. Poole's name to either: Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL. 33823 OR First United Methodist Church (Youth Ministries), 316 Lake Ariana Ave., Auburndale, FL. 33823. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM August 29, 2011 (Today) at the First United Methodist Church, 316 Lake Ariana Blvd., Auburndale. Interment will follow at the Auburndale Memorial Park.
