Obituary of Herndon Godfrey

AUBURNDALE - Mr. Herndon Godfrey, age 80 a resident of Auburndale passed away Thurs., Nov. 24, 2011 at his residence due to COPD. Mr. Godfrey was born Dec. 13, 1930 in Gordon, AL, to Almon H. and Beulah Glaw (Peterson) Godfrey. They came to Auburndale from Germany in 1970. He retired from the Army as a Major after serving 20 years. He served in the Korean Conflict & Vietnam with the 101st Airborne division. He received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, 2 Air Medals & several other commendations for his service. He also retired after 20 years as a Civil Engineer with IMC. Herndon was a life member of DAV, member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Military Officers Association of America, was of the Protestant faith, enjoyed fishing, traveling and genealogy. He was preceded in death by his parents and son Herndon Jay Godfrey. Herndon is survived by his loving family: wife of 61 Years: June Godfrey of Auburndale; son: William "Pete" (Denise) Godfrey of Lakeland; 3 daughters: Vicki Fordsmand, Melonie Sasnett, Kay Godfrey, all of Auburndale; 2 sisters: Janette (Amos) Valentine, Annette Harris, both of Lakeland; 7 grandchildren: Kristofer, Heather, Jessica, Holley, Brandon, Braxton & Ryan; 4 great grandchildren: Hunter, Weston, Ava & Nico. In lieu of flowers the family request's donation's in Mr. Godfrey's name to: Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL. 33823. A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be held 10:00 AM Fri., Dec. 2, 2011 at the Auburndale Memorial Park, 1889 W. Derby Ave., Auburndale. Arrangements By: Kersey Funeral Home.
