Memories of Wayne - By Dale R. Fair 04/05/2017
I got to know Wayne when we were at Morehead State University where he was an outstanding football player. In later years...I coached against him when he was at Auburndale High School and I was at Lake Wales High School. Those were fun days, but the real fun came when he and I played in the Tampa Tribune Basketball Tournament and won it two straight years. At first we didn't have uniforms, and we played against teams who had uniforms and warm-up outfits. Wayne and I were supposed to get the rebounds and pass out to Frank Etheridge and Jim Stone who were our shooters. The two of us were not good shooters so we just rebounded. Wayne was a great teammate and was fun to compete with. The whole team and their wives went to dinner after several of the games.
We continued to be competitive by playing racket ball where he would really work me over. I've never been as sore in my life. Once when Sally and I were driving along Havendale Boulevard in Winter Haven, we noticed Wayne and Hildreth on a motorcycle riding right beside us. We pulled off the highway and had a nice visit. He loved his motorcycle! In later years, he and Pat would ride the motorcycle to Babson Park to visit. Sally and I really enjoyed those visits!
Wayne and I progressed to pontoon boats after he and Pat took Sally and me for a ride through the Chain-of-Lakes in Winter Haven. They were great tour guides and also great dinner companions all the times we met them at Peebles Barbeque in Auburndale. Best barbeque in the world!
Several years ago Wayne gave me two 10' round floats that he had been using on Lake Elbert. He helped me bring them to Crooked Lake on my trailer...what a circus! That was fun! I'm still using them today as extensions of my pier. He was such a great guy.
Wayne always bragged on his children..telling stories of what they were doing and how proud he was of each one. He has a wonderful family. I enjoyed him as a friend and I already miss him. I'm so sorry he's gone.
I send my love to his family. Dale

Kevin, Carla, Jill and Darren...........I am so sorry for your loss! Uncle Wayne was the best! He loved life and he loved his family. We enjoyed every summer coming to visit in Florida, boating, skiing, stories, picking fruit, and so many more. He left many impressions on the people he met with his smile and his kind heart. He was tough on his football players but they respected him. Never forget the time I was at Morehead State and went to a party and when I was introduced as Coach Chapman's niece you should have seen the players scatter! They didn't want me to report back to him.
I love him and always looked up to him.
He will be missed, he is in a better place and I'm sure he has his arms wrapped around your mom.

I was very sad to hear about coach Chapman. He gave me my first coaching job at MSU. I remember it as if it was yesterday. He called me in after my senior year to ask if I would consider staying on. When I said yes, he gave me his car and credit card and sent me to Toledo Ohio to learn football. Men like Wayne are few and far between. Wayne cared more about the person then the game. During my 37 years of coaching I always mention coach Chapman. Thanks coach!

Wayne was one of those "larger than life" type of people. You always knew when he was in the room! His voice, big smile, and ready laugh made him fun to be with. He was always talking about his children and how proud he was of them. He also affirmed often how much he loved my sister, Pat. There was no doubt his heart was full of love - both for her and for his children. His face would light up when he talked about any of them. He will be missed by all who knew him. Please know that our hearts go out to all of you as you cope with your loss. With love and sympathy, Bob & Ann Donaway

Coach Chapman probably got more out of me than any college coach throughout my 4 years! Throughout my entire history as a football player I was no stranger to tough coaches - Coach Chapman ranked up among the top in my experience. I never really got to tell him how much I appreciated what he did for me and how much I respected him. Thank you, Coach! I will never forget the impact you had on me.

I met Coach Chapman at Morehead State in my freshman year! I was a walk-on and some of our players called him "Walking Tall" after a tough Sherrif that bought justice to a town! He molded players into better men! He saw that I had talent and wouldn't quit so he gave me a scholarship! I graduated and played in the NFL and I owe that to Coach Wayne Chapman and Coach Rachael! I'll always appreciate him for that and how he created stories that all of his players will share for life! RIP Coach Chapman!
