Obituary of Jewell Dean Allen

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Jewell W. Allen announce her passing on July 29, 2022, at the age of 95. She was born on August 4, 1926, the oldest child and only daughter of James and Vivian Williams in Springfield, Missouri. She was married twice and had five wonderful children. Jewell had so many incredible adventures in her long life but never seemed to lose her sense of wonder and gratefulness. She married at 21 and in the ensuing years raised five children while traveling across America as a Civil Service family. To earn an income, she taught herself to sew and for years sewed custom clothing for local women and men. She was never without a purpose. She married Carl Allen in 1965 and became his partner in the running and management of Allen’s Historical Café, an Auburndale, FL landmark. For the next 40 years Jewell was instrumental in Allen’s success. She was always there to welcome the guests who went to Allen’s for the unique food, the home like atmosphere and the up-lifting Bluegrass entertainment. Hours could be spent just looking at the antiques that covered every inch of the cafe’s interior. The Thursday night Bluegrass jam sessions saw bands from all over the state vying for a chance to perform on stage in the back room. Many of the performers who got their start at Allen’s went on to become recording artists. Allen’s Historical Café closed its doors in 1998. Jewell and Carl were married for 40 years. Many a summer afternoon would find them on the lakes in Central Florida digging for arrowheads and Indian artifacts. They would scour flea markets and yard sales looking for the unusual antiques that graced the walls of Allen’s Café. Jewell always had a garden in the making and loved to grow flowers and ornamental plants. When she had a chance to just sit, Jewell loved to read books about the Old West, Indians and Biographies of Presidents. Jewells’ greatest love, aside from her family, were her pets. She was never without a pet, chosen or stray, common or uncommon. She leaves behind three - Honey, Jack and Cookie – they will be well looked after and loved. Jewell passed away just 6 days shy of her 96th birthday. She was a wonderful Mom, Mom-in-Law, Grandma, and Great Grandma and leaves behind 5 children, 3 in-law children, 8 grandkids and 18 great-grandkids. She is now on to a new adventure – Happy Trails, Mom
