Dearest Maxwells, I have thought of Jim, Lynn, and Reed ( a baby) so often over the years since graduating from Stoneleigh Burnham in 1974. This is a tragic loss. I’m so sorry. I’m not surprised at all to learn of Jim’s dedication to improving the lives of young people. That wisdom— smile, I will never forget ! Jim and Lynn were an inspiration to all whose lives they touched.
Peace and LOVE, Sherry Higgins Britton SBS 1974

Astute. Professional. Sagacious. Affable. Proficient. These are just a few of many adjectives with which I could describe Jim Maxwell, a wonderful friend with whom I had the pleasure of working for several years.
While reading various epitaphs on 16th century tombstones many years ago during a visit to Chads Ford, Pennsylvania, a certain epitaph was inscribed with these resounding words:
Think of me friend as you walk by.
For as you are now, so once was I.
And as I am now, one day you'll be.
So, pick up your cross and follow me.
My wife (Ann) and I will miss Jim, and we wish to extend our deepest condolences to his family, asking God to fill the gap of sorrow in their hearts. Larry & Ann Hild

I’ve never been sure if Jim realized the extent of the children and adult lives he impacted for the better. About 29 years ago, I had the fortune of starting my teaching career in one of Jim’s schools. Jim worked diligently with my challenging class. We put things into play like Skillstreaming (explicit instruction of prosocial skills) and the frameworks of what one day would be akin to what we know as Positive Behavior Support. Those strategies we worked through in the beginning and developed years later followed me as I moved through my educational career. Jim gifted me with a solid foundation so many years ago, and as a result, students, staff, and families benefited from his influence far beyond the borders of Polk County. I hope he knew I am forever grateful for his wisdom, kindness, and professionalism.
To his beloved family, may you find peace and comfort during this time.

I am so saddened by your loss. Jim was a good friend during our years together at Vanguard; his positive outlook and caring ways made many difficult situations easier .I can still picture him in my mind's eye, loping across the campus with that special smile on his face, ready to tell a story to make me laugh. One of my favorite times with Jim was working together with him running Senior Seminar, where we helped the students prepare for successful future lives. Working with Jim never seemed like work. I regret I allowed us to drift apart after we both left Vanguard. He was truly a wonderful man.
Jim had a positive impact on so many lives, both students and adults. He will be greatly missed by many. I pray you are able to find comfort in the many wonderful memories you have of times with him. Vicki Iliff

Jim was truly good guy, a gentle soul. Always smiling, always positive. He helped me in many ways when I moved from PR to Fl and started my career as a School Psychologist here in Polk. He was a caring supervisor, always available and good friend. He will be missed!

I was a duck out of the water during my employment for Polk County Schools @ the Bartow Airbase, but Jim accorded me dignity and never made me feel uncomfortable. He was a true gentle man. I am sorry for the family that he is gone. But, I believe he will be back again when the world is new. Soon. Jesus spoke of the reality of that new world when he mercifully promised that earthly paradise to the man impaled beside him. Love to you all.
