I am so sad to hear that my great friend has passed. I did not find out until today a year later. I found out because I truly believe that Jose's spirit came down to deliver the message in a very spirtual way. Today I went to my daughters school basketball game. When I arrived there was an older couple that looked so familiar. I kept looking at them and a voice inside me kept telling me over and over to go talk to them. I then decided to approach them and ask them where I may have known them from. They asked me where I worked in the past and I answered the Rays. They said they also both worked for the Rays back in around 2004. That is when they asked me, did you know Jose Tavarez? and I said of course he is my great friend. He is a wonderful, loving and such a caring person. Then they gave me the very sad news that Jose passed away last year. I was so sad to hear that news but at the same time I felt so much peace because I felt that Jose was actually delivering the message to me. Every year around this time of year during Thanksgiving time he would either call me or send a text just to say hi and see how the family was doing. I noticed last year I missed talking to him and now this year I feel I received his message but in a spiritual way through that couple. I really felt his presence. I feel he is at peace and enjoying his new journey with God. I am so glad I listened to that inner spiritual voice because I feel Jose wanted me to receive his message one last time. We will truly miss Jose. God bless always my friend!

To the family of our long time friend Jose Tavarez:
We are so saddened by his sudden departure and share your grief and pain. We met Jose and Celia at Eglin AFB, FL back in the 70s and we became close friends, a friendship that flourished and continues to this day. No matter where we were stationed at or lived at throughout the years Jose always found us and kept in touch.
One moment I have always remembered throughout the years is that Jose and Celia were the first one in the hospital when our daughter Christine was born, the first ones to hold he besides us!!
Thank you Jose for your friendship and thank you Celia and family for sharing him with all of us. May he rest in peace and may God bring fortitude and consolation to the whole family.
With love,
Manny, Didi, Christine and Jose Nieves

Although we've only known Jose for a short time, he made such an impact on the both of us. He is without a doubt the most generous, kindest, unselfish person we have ever met. Jose and CT welcomed us to the neighborhood with open arms and open hearts and have made us feel like family. His love of family, friends, and country were evident always. We were extremely blessed to have met such an incredible person, and will miss seeing and talking with you. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jose's family; take warmth in knowing that God's special angel is keeping watch over you. With love, Slate and Betty

Dear CT and family:
Jose touched the lives of so many people. He was the most generous, kind, and selfless individual that we have ever encountered. There are many stories about how Jose helped people during economic hardships, but he also helped in other ways. He inspired people to forgive, to love, to hope, to achieve goals, to help in the community and to be a better person. He was a man devoted to his family who, after 44 years of marriage, was still in love with his wife. He was a wonderful father to his sons and daughters-in-law. He loved his grandkids and enjoyed being with them. He was the best friend anyone could have.
Now that Dave and I have begun to spend part of the year in Florida, we were so looking forward to spending more time with Jose and you traveling or simply being together. That dream has been taken from us, but what will remain are all the precious memories of the good times we spent in California, Italy, Florida, and Washington, DC.
We know that Jose will rest in peace in the arms of Jesus and he will be watching over all of you. Until we see him again, we will miss him very, very much.
With great love and sentiment,
Maria & Dave

The world is a lesser place without Jose. I served with him at the 1st Helicopter Squadron and he was the epitome of a leader. He always put his flight engineers first and made sure we had everything we needed to accomplish the mission. He was incredibly funny and had a quick wit. We missed him at our informal reunion this year but we all had fond memories and great stories about Jose and we know he was there in spirit. The Tavarez family will always have a place in the hearts of those that served with them. Vaya con Dios mi amigo. Until we meet again.

To the family of U.S. Air Force Retired Chief Master Sargent Jose Tavarez
Every American’s flag should be at half-staff in honor of your loss.
Each and every breath of fresh air that we take for granted is made possible because of the sacrifices of warriors like retired CMSgt. Jose Tavarez.
Although your loss is filling your heart with sadness at the time, know that his fellow warrior's most sincere condolences are being sent to your family and friends of this American Warrior.
It is because of his willingness to serve in harm’s way that allows us to live free. He served as a defender of OUR freedom. Now may he rest in peace with God, his mission is complete. The stars of Heaven are brighter because CMSgt Jose Tavarez is in Heaven standing watch over all of us.
We pray that the Lord above lay his healing hands on the family and friends of this Warrior, and comfort them during this emotional time. Give them the strength to carry on while remembering their fallen loved one evermore.

I am so sorry that Jose is gone. I was lucky to serve with him at the First Helicopter Squadron when I was the Operations Officer and Commander. He reliably led the flight engineers and provided wise counsel, sometimes even when I didn't know I needed it. Jose was one I could always count on to have a ready smile and kind word in any situation. I even got to hide in his basement one year as part of a surprise birthday celebration. I enjoyed seeing him at informal squadron reunions in recent years and was looking forward to seeing him this year, but he was unfortunately not able to travel. Jose, I will miss you but I will never forget you.

As a pilot, I served with Jose at 1st Heli, and I remember him as a very class act -- a professional aviator who also demonstrated a great sense of humor. I enjoyed flying with him and working alongside him. He helped make us a great team, and I am glad the Air Force recognized his abilities with greater responsibility later in his career. One of the really good ones....
